Hikikomori Surprise is the brainchild of North England based Chad Grinkirth. After playing in several 'post-rock' bands, Chad became frustrated with the formulaic sounds, live scene and ideologies behind the genre. Considering the movement to be saturated, stale and 'pseudo-experimental',
Chad quit his band, Steadfast, who were on the verge of being signed by a large label.
Shortly after supporting Oceansize in Sheffield, Chad became extremely disillusioned with the entire scene, and began making music on his own. His talents as a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter in Steadfast were not wasted, as
shortly afterwards Chad had released his debut solo material. Citing James Plotkin, Steve Roach and Jonty Harrison among his influences, it is apparent Chad has moved far away from the oversaturated post-rock idiom and embraced experimental sound sculpture.
Expect pristinely exaggerated acoustic sounds combined with sinister digital processing that will force you to reconsider your existence.
Taking the name from an almost specifically far-eastern psychological condition, Hikikomori Surprise explores the cause and effect of modern misanthropy, anti-humanism and the next frontiers of metaphysical reality.
